When to go There are year-round attractions in New York so anytime is a good time to go. Autumn and Spring are when New York has its most pleasant weather, with winter reaching freezing temperatures and the summer finding the city sweltering in the heat. Getting around New York’s iconic yellow cabs are often the first form of transport that people see when they arrive in New York, and something most of us have in the movies. A trip in a yellow cab is a must for any visitor. However, New York is blest with an extensive public transport system and visitors can make use of buses, the Subway and bicycles as well as finding their way around on foot. Subway The Subway trains run 24 hours a day so whatever time you’re out, a train will be able to take you to one of the 468 stations on the network. Points of interest / attractions Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbour. The statue stands at 46.5m tall. The statue was presented to the United States of America by France in 1886. Promenade and observatory deck tours of the statue are available to the public. A ferry runs from Battery Park to Liberty Island, but the Statue is also visible from the iconic Staten Island ferry, which offers wonderful views of Lower Manhattan and is a free service. Empire State Building The Empire State Building was opened in 1931 and is located on the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. The Empire State Building was the world’s tallest building for 40 years, standing at 443 metres tall. There are observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors which are open to the public 365 days a year. Central Park Central Park is located in Manhattan and was opened in 1857. The vast park contains walking tracks, Central Park Zoo, Central Park Conservatory Garden a wildlife park and wooded areas. There are many events held in Central Park throughout the year, some of these include concerts in the summer from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera as well as other events. Broadway Catch one of the many magnificent shows on Broadway. Tickets are available from theatres and online. Buy tickets early to ensure that the show is not sold out. Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) The Museum of Modern Art is one of New York’s most popular tourist attractions, and has been showcasing some of the finest modern artistic talent since 1929.
