Manchester is situated in the North-West of England. The city was at the forefront of the industrial revolution and many of the attractions today celebrate this heritage. The city also has a modern focus with three universities bringing a large number of young people to the area. The Manchester Evening News Arena plays host to many big names of the entertainment world. The city underwent considerable regeneration when it played host to the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

When to go The best time to visit Manchester is between April and September, when the weather is generally milder and drier than at other times of the year. Getting around Metrolink Manchester has a light rail (or tram) system which runs 364 days a year and is accessible to those with mobility difficulties. Tickets are available from machines located at tram stops and from GMPTE travel shops. Train Direct train services are available from Manchester Piccadilly station to many of the UK’s major cities including London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. There is also a comprehensive local train network, including trains to Blackpool and Liverpool. Tickets are available at the station or online. Trains also operate on a city circle route stopping at Victoria, Deansgate, Oxford Road, Salford and Piccadilly. Free City Centre Shuttle Bus A free shuttle bus runs on three routes around central Manchester to connect the shopping areas, train stations and other major attractions. Points of interest/attractions Sport Manchester is home to Manchester United football club, the most famous football club in the world. Their home at Old Trafford is open for tours and museum visits, with parking available at the stadium. Stadium tours are also available at the City of Manchester stadium, the home of Manchester City. Cricket also plays a large part in the sporting life of the city, with Old Trafford Cricket ground the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club, and also host to international test matches. Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and, a legacy of this is a range of outstanding sporting facilities. Museum of Science and Industry The Museum of Science and Industry is a vast museum housed in an old passenger railway terminal. The Museum particularly records the impact of the Industrial revolution in the area. The nearest train station to the museum is Deansgate. Lowry The Lowry is situated in the former dockyards of the Manchester Ship Canal. The waterside complex includes an art gallery, theatres, studios and restaurants. Guided tours are available. Lake District Manchester is the Gateway to the beautiful Lake District. Lake Winderemere is probably the best known of the lakes, and many tourists choose to base themselves there for short breaks in the area and take advantage of the paddle steamers running on the lake. Attractions in the area include Kendal market town, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage at Grasmere and the wonderful walks that can be undertaken from anywhere in the area.
