When to go July and August are often the hottest months of the year in Rome, and are also the busiest. This can lead to spending a great deal of time queuing in the heat for entry to sights such as the Vatican and therefore, if possible, a holiday planned outside these months may be more relaxing. Getting around Rome is a reasonably small city and it is possible to explore comfortably on foot. For those reliant on public transport, there is a comprehensive network of buses covering all parts of the city. The Metro is possibly the easiest way to get around, with tickets available from many sources including at Metro stations and news stands. All the major car hire companies operate in Rome, and for those who prefer two wheels, scooters can also be hired from many companies.
