Cheap Flights to Edinburgh

Compare and book cheap flights to Edinburgh from Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick and more.

Edinburgh is approximately 200 miles from Dublin, thus making it an ideal destination for either a short holiday or as a base for exploring further across Scotland and the United Kingdom.  Flights are available from Ireland to Edinburgh with various providers including Ryanair and Aer Lingus, with many airlines offering connections via other UK airports including London and Manchester.

When to go

Edinburgh is at its warmest and driest in the summer (June, July and August).  The temperature drops in the winter months, but the days can be crisp and clear and there is plenty to see in Edinburgh all months of the year.

Getting around

Car hire can be a good way to see as much of the city as possible, although it should be noted that there is very little parking in the centre of Edinburgh, therefore the best way to get around the city is often either to walk or use public transport.  Edinburgh Waverley train station is centrally placed and offers train services across the United Kingdom, including a fast service down to London.

A good bus service connects all areas of the city, with bike hire available for those feeling slightly more energetic.

Points of interest/attractions

Festivals

Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of the New Year and Edinburgh is well known for its Hogmanay celebrations, with a huge street party being thrown on 31st December.  Tickets are needed for entry to this and accommodation gets booked up well in advance.

Edinburgh also plays host to the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle,

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest Arts Festival.  This takes place in August each year and attracts talent from across the globe.

Royal Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle, built on a massive rock, offers amazing views across Edinburgh from its ramparts.  It is one of the most visited attractions in Scotland.  The Scottish Crown Jewels are held here.  The Castle is open all year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Holyroodhouse is the Queen’s official Scottish residence.  State ceremonies are still performed there today.  The palace is closed to visitors whenever royal visits occur and on a small number of other days within the year, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Edinburgh Castle and Holyroodhouse are joined by the so-called Royal Mile.  The Royal Mile today contains a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as more evidence of Edinburgh’s long history.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is now permanently moored at Leith, just outside the city, and is open to visitors.
